‘The Year 1812‘ festival overture commonly known as the ‘1812 Overture‘ is an overture written in 1880 during the romantic period by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky(1840-1893). Born in the small town of Votkinsk, Tchaikovsky’s music was mostly in the western tradition though taking influence from Russian elements.

The 1812 overture is slightly better but not really a success; in fact, it sounds pedestrian from the outset. But the Israel Philharmonic produces a wonderful sound and generates real power, and the climax of the work is a riot (though not a mess, as it becomes in some performances).
